Senior Cat Care Tips
May 1, 2018

One thing that is easy to love about our feline pals is the fact that they are so easy to care for. Kitties aren’t completely independent, however. They need proper care to stay happy and healthy, especially as they age. Read on for some great senior cat care tips from a Fort Bragg, NC vet.

Veterinary Care

Fluffy may need to come in a bit more often in her golden years. Regular exams will allow your vet to keep detailed records of your pet’s health. This makes it easier to spot subtle changes that could indicate developing issues. There are now many options for helping pets stay happy and healthy in their golden years! In between appointments, keep an eye out for signs of sickness. Call your vet immediately if you notice anything amiss.

Playtime

Playing will keep Fluffy active and entertained, and will also offer her beneficial mental stimulation. Spend a few minutes a day playing with your cat!

Comfy Beds

Believe it or not, senior cats sleep even more than their younger counterparts. Make sure that Fluffy has plenty of soft, comfy spots to snuggle up in.

Keep Kitty Indoors

We recommend that all cats stay indoors. Cars, predators, weather, and other hazards are very dangerous to our furry pals! However, because older cats are often slower than young felines, and don’t see or hear as well, they are even more at risk.

Kitty Stairs

Fluffy may have a hard time jumping up to her favorite lounging spots. Get your furball some kitty ramps or stairs to help her out. You can also just set out footstools so that your kitty can use them as stairs.

Senior Facilities

Your furry buddy may find it easier to use a litterbox with low walls. If you have more than one floor in your home, keep extras on every level. That way, Fluffy won’t have to use the stairs as much.

Night Light

Just like people, cats sometimes experience a decline in their vision as they age. Keep a nightlight on after dark to help Fluffy find her way around more easily.

Brushing

Older cats sometimes have a hard time reaching their entire bodies to groom themselves. Offer your furball a helping hand by brushing her gently.
