Keeping Fido’s Teeth Healthy
June 1, 2020

Did you know that dental issues are a huge problem with our canine pals? Fido can develop a variety of problems, such as gum disease, abscesses, and misalignments. These problems can be quite painful for your furry best friend!   Fortunately, there are some things you can do to keep your pet’s choppers in good shape. A Fort Bragg, NC vet lists some of them below.

Brushing

A doggy toothbrush may very well be your main weapon against dental problems. Of course, you can’t just expect Fido to open his mouth on command, especially if he’s never had his teeth brushed before. Start slow, by just gently massaging your pup’s teeth and gums. Then, slowly add in doggy toothpaste and a pet toothbrush. Be sure to incorporate treats and praise, so your furry companion forms a good association with having his teeth cleaned.

Dental-Formula Products

If your pup won’t sit still long enough for you to brush his teeth, don’t fret. There are other options. Ask your vet for tips on using dental-formula food, treats, or chews. (Tip: put some pet toothpaste on a chew stick, and let Fido have at it.) Oral rinses can also help.

Exams

Regular exams are just as important for dogs as they are for people. Have Fido’s teeth examined at least once a year, starting at age one. In between visits, watch for signs of trouble. Some common ones are bad breath, bleeding gums, tartar buildup, excessive drool, and changes in eating habits or behavior. Call your vet immediately if you notice any of these.

Water

Making sure that Fido always has fresh water is important for many reasons, but it’s also crucial for his dental health. Drinking fresh water helps rinse food particles away, which can stop plaque and tartar from forming. Be sure to clean and refill your dog’s bowl at least once a day.

Chew Toys

Did you know that chewing is actually good for Fido’s choppers? Chewing keeps your dog’s bones and muscles strong. It also stimulates your canine buddy’s saliva glands, which will help keep his teeth clean. Plus, this will also keep your pooch entertained and out of trouble! Just be careful with rawhide chews. Sometimes pieces can break off. These can be dangerous if ingested!
