Senior Dog Care
July 15, 2020

Is your pooch starting to go grey around the muzzle? Is Fido becoming more interested in napping than in chasing the neighbor’s cat? Dogs somehow manage to become even cuter as they age. Of course, you may need to make some changes to his care regimen as he gets older. A Fort Bragg, NC vet discusses senior dog care in this article.

Diet

Obesity is a common problem with older dogs. As you probably guessed, Fido will never outgrow his love of bacon. However, your pup won’t be as active as he once was, which will make it easy for him to gain weight. Don’t fall for those sad eyes! Ask your vet for specific recommendations, including portion sizes, meal schedules, and tips on switching to senior-formula food.

Activity

Make sure that Fido is getting the right type and amount of activity. You’ll want to ask your vet about this, as our canine pals all have their own specific exercise needs. That said, most pups need at least a daily walk.

Bed

A comfy bed is one of life’s greatest luxuries, as far as Fido is concerned. (We’re inclined to agree.) Orthopedic begs are always a good bet for senior pooches, because of the extra support they offer.

Playtime

Playing is good for dogs both mentally and physically. Fido will tire out more quickly than he used to, so keep an eye out for signs of fatigue. Also, choose toys that are made for older dogs. These may be softer, or they may light up or make noise.

Dinnerware

Fido will have to splay his legs to eat from bowls on the floor. This is hard on his back and neck! Elevated dishes will be much more comfortable for him.

Grooming

Fido probably won’t be any more fond of baths now than he was as a puppy. However, he will be much more comfortable with proper grooming. This includes dental care. Nail trims are also important. Long claws are very uncomfortable for older dogs, and can often snag and tear on things.

Tail Wags

Dogs are very loyal. Your furry buddy really wants nothing more than to hang out with you! Enjoy this special stage of Fido’s life! Carve out time for your pet every day. Don’t skimp on those belly rubs, either!
