Adopt a Shelter Pet Day
April 15, 2018

Did you know that April 30th is Adopt A Shelter Pet Day? Adopting from shelters is one of the best things you can do to promote good animal welfare. There are many great reasons to consider adopting your new dog or cat from a local shelter. Here, a local Fayetteville, NC vet discusses adopting shelter pets.

Benefits of Adopting From A Shelter

There are many benefits to adopting from a shelter. First and foremost, you’ll be giving that one lucky pet a second chance at happiness. It’s a wonderful feeling to know you’ve saved an animal’s life! You’ll also help other animals in need, both by freeing up space at the shelter and by supporting them financially, which helps them care for other pets. Saving money is another important benefit. Shelters are typically much cheaper than breeders or pet stores.

Choosing Your Pet

Pet shelters have all sorts of dogs and cats. No matter what size, age, or breed you are looking for, there’s a good chance you’ll find Fluffy or Fido waiting for you. That said, always keep an open mind. You may go to the shelter with your mind set on one type of dog or cat, only to come home with something completely different. Pets sometimes have a way of picking us, rather than it being the other way around!

Settling In

Being in a shelter is scary and stressful for our animal friends, so don’t be surprised if your furry friend sleeps a lot at first. We recommend giving Fido or Fluffy a quiet, comfy place to relax and settle in, such as a spare bedroom. Set your new buddy up in that room with food, toys, treats, bedding, and, in Fluffy’s case, a litterbox, and just give them time to adjust. If you have other pets, be sure to make introductions slowly and carefully. One of the first things you’ll want to do is make a veterinary appointment. Aside from that, just give your animal companion time to relax and settle in. Don’t force attention on your new pet. To win their trust, focus on offering great TLC, as well as lots of toys and treats. You’ll have purrs or tail wags before you know it!
