Keeping Kitty Cool
May 15, 2023

Summer is just around the corner.  Many of our feline patients love this time of year! Fluffy gets to soak up lots of sun and enjoy watching birds, squirrels, and butterflies. The heat can be dangerous for your furry pal, however, so you’ll need to take steps to keep her safe and comfy. A Fort Bragg, NC vet offers some advice on how to do that below.

Climate Control

Keep your kitty indoors as much as possible when it’s really hot out, especially around midday, when temps are going to be highest. Make sure that Fluffy has access to rooms that are cooled by climate control.

Cold Snacks

There’s no better way to cool off on a sweltering day than by enjoying a yummy snack. This applies to kitties, too! Fluffy may enjoy having her canned food chilled. You can also make her a kitty slushy by pouring tuna juice over ice or blending some canned food with plain fat-free yogurt in a blender, and freezing it. If you want to go all-out, offer your furry buddy some kitty ice cream, which you can find online or in many stores.

Water

Keeping your feline pal hydrated is one of the most important things you can do for her in hot weather. You may want to set out extra water bowls. You can also drop an ice cube into your kitty’s bowl when it’s really hot out. That can go a long way towards keeping her cool!

It’s worth noting that many cats prefer running water. Consider getting Fluffy a little kitty fountain.

Brush The Furball

While kitties are pretty good about keeping up with their beauty regiments, they can always use a helping hand. Keeping the dust, fur, and dander out of Fluffy’s coat can help her stay comfy.

Cool Beds

Cats are pretty good at getting comfortable, so your furball will naturally seek out cool spots to relax in. Help her out by setting up a few cool beds. Offer her a hammock bed, or make one by tying fabric to the legs of a table. The air moving beneath the material will help keep it cool. You can also keep a ceramic tile in the freezer, and put that in Fluffy’s bed, under a thin towel. Cooling pads can also help.
